ACOMS Review

Welcoming a New ACOMS Board Member: Dr. Elda Fisher

Dr. Elda Fisher has joined the ACOMS Board of Directors. We spoke with her about her goals and experience as she takes on this role.

ACOMS: What inspired you to join the ACOMS Board of Directors?

Elda Fisher (EF): I was encouraged to join ACOMS more than a decade ago — and I had no idea how much I would love this group. The surgeons in this group are truly amazing and I look forward to every conference. ACOMS is just the right size and with the honorable goal to keep education at the forefront and fingertips of its membership — being on the board will allow me to take personal responsibility for the success of this mission.

ACOMS: Can you share any goals you have for your time as a Board member?

EF: As a lifelong educator and academic, I look forward to seeing ACOMS developing its role as the primary source for high-quality and accessible oral and maxillofacial surgical education for everyone in the specialty. I hope to expand the reach of ACOMS so more residents, new graduates, and practicing surgeons become aware of the benefits of life-long education that ACOMS offers.

ACOMS: What are you most looking forward to most about serving in this role?

EF: I'm looking forward to sharing ideas and experiences with the other board members who I respect deeply and value their thoughts and opinions. I think in working together we can do great things for ACOMS, but maybe in reality I get the most out of it because I get to learn from them.

ACOMS: How will your unique strengths as an OMS professional propel ACOMS forward?

EF: I love teaching, and I love innovative ways to apply the oral and maxillofacial surgical expertise. As gender affirmation surgeon, I believe that oral and maxillofacial surgeons have the unique training to perform these technique sensitive operations with skill in both the planning and execution phases. I think by highlighting strengths like these and exposing our membership to education and training in many new areas where oral and maxillofacial surgeons have the skill set to excel, we encourage all everyone to expand our scope, broaden our fields of expertise, and expose our talents to other medical and dental specialists.
