Swellings of the parotid gland are frequently encountered clinical problems in oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. The etiology of these swellings ranges from inflammatory processes to benign and malignant tumors of the parotid gland. Given this broad differential diagnosis, the primary exercise in the initial workup of these patients is to distinguish these two broad diagnostic categories to proceed with the acquisition of imaging studies and surgery, as needed. The ultimate goal of the workup and treatment of parotid gland pathology is to arrive at an accurate diagnosis that permits the execution of definitive and durable treatment.
