Lecture: Cleft Care Challenges in 2026

Session Description

While primary surgical repair of cleft lip and palate has advanced significantly, the greatest challenge in cleft rehabilitation today lies beyond the initial procedures. Despite optimal surgical technique in infancy, most patients with unilateral or bilateral cleft lip and palate will exhibit nasomaxillary deficiency by the mixed dentition stage.

This presentation outlines principles for diagnosing and managing the adolescent or adult cleft patient presenting with nasomaxillary deficiency, residual oronasal fistulae, alveolar cleft gaps, nasal obstruction, and facial dysmorphology. A successful orthognathic procedure provides the skeletal foundation for secondary reconstruction, emphasizing staged care tailored to restore both function and appearance.

Learning Objectives
  • Understand optimal staging of cleft lip and palate reconstruction.
  • Recognize nasomaxillary deformities and optimal reconstruction methods.
  • Identify why cleft jaw deformities are often undertreated in adolescents.

Lecture: Timing for Extraction, Grafting and Implant Placement

Session Description

Numerous details are indispensable to achieve an excellent, long-lasting outcome in implant dentistry. Among them is the timing of bone and soft tissue augmentation. Immediate or delayed implant placement, ridge preservation procedures, and staged grafts and implant placement are among the possible approaches for restoring patients with unrestorable teeth.

Learning Objectives
  • Assess surgical risks in implant candidates.
  • Differentiate timing options for implant placement.
  • Choose indications and techniques for immediate placement and augmentation.
3:30 – 5:00 p.m. Après Ski
4:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Lecture: Surgical Alternatives for the Atrophic Posterior Mandible

Session Description

Several surgical techniques can vertically reconstruct atrophic alveolar bone, though many have high morbidity and are technique sensitive. The use of short and ultra-short implants offers a promising, lower-risk alternative for rehabilitation of patients with severely resorbed alveolar ridges.

Lecture: Beyond Norms: Incorporating Gender Preferences into Orthognathic Surgery Planning

Session Description

Traditional orthognathic surgery planning relies on gendered normative measurements. This session explores how to integrate patient-specific gender aesthetic goals into orthognathic surgical design, moving beyond conventional cephalometric metrics toward personalized, gender-affirming outcomes.

Learning Objectives
  • Identify parameters that affect gender presentation in orthognathic surgery.
  • Modify treatment plans for gender-specific aesthetic goals.
  • Describe midface augmentation options to complement Le Fort advancement.
